Barking mad!

Hello,
Every morning I get up at the same time, it's an hour later than I used to rise when I worked. I could lie in bed until much later and some days - it would be very easy to do that but I choose not to. Why? Well I read an article that said going to bed and getting up at approximately the same time each day is good for you, it encourages better sleep patterns and kick starts your day. As a poor sleeper, I am willing to give anything a go and I have to admit that, although, when the alarm goes off, I give a huge sigh and try to bury myself under the duvet, most mornings I do actually feel much better once I've done it. I get up, go to the bathroom, get dressed, get my trainers on, have a cup of tea because that makes everything ok with the world, right? Grab a banana, bottle of water, ipod and make my way to our local country park. This is where I walk. There are lots of people going about their daily business either with dogs, on their way to work, jogging or just sitting and chatting with passers by. Its funny how you tend to see the same folk most days, and mentally conjure up nick names for them and reasons why they're there, or is that just me?  Occasionally, I may stop and have a quick chat with some people, I'm just drawn to them. Like the old man with a boisterous cocker spaniel which is far too lively for him (bless him) and the lady who always looks sad and lonely with the hesitant French Bulldog. I never speak to the dog walker with half a dozen unruly dogs, all off leads at the same time, that shoot off in every direction as she desperately tries to keep up with the pooper scooper and generally make a nuisance of themselves. I just tut and shake my head! The overweight lady who walks with her headphones in and who would never even give me eye contact until recently but now gives a smile and a cheery hello - good on her for getting out there and exercising!  There's a whole world that exists on my doorstep, before some people even get out of bed, that I never knew existed before I retired. We are so lucky in this country to have such fantastic parks and green spaces. On the whole the country park where we live is very well looked after as it is well used by all sectors of the community. Today though I was saddened to see an area that had been on fire, it wasn't there yesterday when I walked. Everywhere is so dry at the moment and the grass is like straw so it wouldn't take much to set it alight - a careless cigarette, glass bottle that magnified in the hot sun, a barbeque that got out of hand or, heaven forbid, arson! Dare I say it but we could do with some rain, just a little bit to look after the wildlife and gardens (and particularly for the man in the bungalow up the road who laid turf 3 weeks ago - schoolboy error!) We have been putting water out for the multitude of small animals and birds that arrive daily to our garden. Hopefully they will all be alright.
I can thoroughly recommend getting out for an early morning walk, it starts your day off in a positive way, goes a long way to getting your 10,000 steps, plus gives you chance to contemplate the day ahead. Its also free as opposed to a costly gym membership plus fuel to get there. Try listening to some podcasts while you walk, its a great way to relax and learn something new too and keep your mind stimulated.
How dry are these fields?

The scorched grass. Luckily it hasn't spread too far!

Thanks for reading
Until next time
Jules

I will try to read all comments and reply. Please be polite and kind. Thanks :)

  1. Looking forward to hearing more of your lifestyle now you have made the jump.... everywhere is so dry, I do so love this heat and sunshine, but admit we do need some rain to help with local moors fires (Manchester area)

    1. Ho Tilly, thanks so much for reading and commenting. Yes the fires on the moors are terrible, I can’t believe that anyone would start one deliberately, shocking! I’ve not been up to the moors in the Peak District fro a few weeks as it’s just been too hot to walk for any length of time. Jules x

  2. It's lovely to see your new blog, I'll add you to my follow list.
It must be a refreshing change for you to be able to head out to the park instead of work on these beautiful mornings. I much prefer to get my exercise in the outdoors rather than in the gym too. X

  3. That does look dry out there. We are headed for the same conditions here as there is no rain in the forecast for quite some time. Patches on our lawn are browning out. Fingers crossed for all of us to get some rain soon.

    1. I love the sun and warm weather usually but think it just needs a good couple of showers to freshen everything up. You’re right, fingers crossed but only for a shower not too much.

  4. Hi Jules. Have just popped over from John's blog.
I took early retirement from teaching in Comprehensive at 50 - am now 85 and have enjoyed my retirement immensely. Three years after retiring I was widowed sadly but after three years I remarried and 21 years of bliss with my second husband too. Now I am a widow again. I am sure you will never regret retirement - it leaves one young enough to enjoy a full life.

    1. Hello, thanks so much for reading my blog. 50 was really young to retire too but I can see you’ve had a long and full retirement. Sorry to hear about your husband passing away so soon after you retired, that must of been a terrible time. It’s nice to see that you have gone on to find happiness again. I have no regrets at finishing work when I did, academies are not for me. What subject did you teach?

  9. I'm trying the same approach, i.e. getting up at the same time each morning. I have a health referral to the local gym so my plan is to be up and out to the gym by 7am every morning. That'll be from September as I have holidays to fit in before I start that particular routine. In the meantime I'm walking daily along the canal towpath, which is about five minutes walk from my home.

    1. The canal towpaths are lovely to walk along Eileen and so interesting. I love the characters you often meet on the narrow boats. So friendly especially the ones who live on them as their permanent homes. Been offered tours of their boats and even cups of tea before now ha ha. Keep up the walking and good luck with the gym. You're right though, get your hols out of the way and enjoy then crack on at the gym. Good luck x

  10. Wow Jules....15 followers already!
I also get up at the same time 7.45am and go to bed at 10 .....nothing on TV after that!! Can't say it helps me sleep but might be even worse if I was changing times ! Just off out with the dogs and hoping to meet up with other dog owners to chat to. I have met several really good friends in the last 10 yrs or so through just chatting on walks. It is thankfully much cooler here this morning and I shall have to take a cardigan I think......if I can remember where one is after all this time of ghastly heat ! Have a nice day, as they say.
