Birthday cakes and strange requests.
Evening Everyone.
Just a short post this evening, we've had unexpected visitors so I'm very late blogging tonight. It was my Granddaughter's 9th birthday. We always take them out for their birthdays to the toy shop to choose a gift and then treat them to a milkshake or ice cream. This time things were different as she has asked for money from everyone for a new bed. Yes you read that correctly, a bed! What 9 year old actually asks for a bed for a birthday present???
Now, I had a conversation with my son, in which I pointed out, that when he was a small child had I ever expected him to have a bed as a gift, or, had i indeed thought that that was my job as a parent to provide such a basic necessity. He laughed, and then explained that she had only had a new bed just under a year ago and they had tried to dissuade her from this nonsense but she was adamant that she wanted nothing for her birthday other than a fancy high sleeper cabin bed with a desk under the same as her cousin had recently had. They thought that by saying that if she wanted it she would have to have it for your birthday instead of presents, that she would change her mind. But no! So, as it was almost £400 that is what we have had to contribute to. I still don't know what I think about it as a year is a long time to wait for another birthday to come around?
Anyway I couldn't just turn up with money in a card so bought some sweeties and baked her a little cake. They usually have a birthday party and so I've made all manner or weird and wonderful creations in the past but this time they had just taken a friend to Chester Zoo for the day. Another sign that she is growing up. Too fast in my opinion!
I made just a simple vanilla traybake with vanilla butter cream icing and covered it with dolly mixture sweets. Easy, inexpensive but very much enjoyed.
Until tomorrow

I will try to read all comments and reply.
Please be polite and kind. Thanks :)
She's growing up.
ReplyDeleteShe certainly is. x
DeleteThey do grow up fast now. She'll be wanting a phone next!
ReplyDeleteI dread that Eileen. That's when they turn anti social x
DeleteI think your grand daughter is learning a valuable lesson about money in a time when people put everything on their credit card because they want it now.
ReplyDeleteMy son really really wanted an iphone and like your son I said he could have one if he saved up for it himself. Took him a year but he did! And he looked after that phone as it was precious to him.
I hope it helped him learn the value of money. He's now a student, halfway through a 4 year course to become a radiographer and has no student loans or any debt (in Scotland you get your undergraduate fees paid)
I think that's very true Ali. None of my children have credit cards thankfully. I always brought them up to know that if they couldn't afford it they shouldn't have it until they could. What a sensible and clever young man your son is. Good luck with his exams x

I think bunk beds are a novelty that soon wears off. A couple of years ago, when my daughter and her partner were decorating and getting new furniture for my five year old grand-daughter's bedroom she wanted a bunk bed with desk and wardrobe underneath just like one of her friends had. She was pleased with it at the time, but for the past year has been saying that she wants an ordinary bed again, but unfortunately because of the cost it won't be happening for a while.
ReplyDeleteAlso thinking about it, perhaps it's a good thing that her parents are telling her to save up for it herself as by the time she has enough saved up the novelty will be a thing of the past.
DeleteThey are very good with money Joan and it's good that they are passing those skills on to their children, especially in this buy now pay later culture. That's what'es happened in reverse here, it's a pity we don't live closer and could just swap beds haha x
DeleteSuch a fun birthday cake!
ReplyDeleteThanks Bea. It was really just whipped up with what I had in the house. Sometimes the things we don't have time to fuss over turn out the best x
