Blooming fireworks!!!
Evening everyone. We have and in fact still are having a terrible time with our Cocker Spaniel whilst the fireworks are going off.
We drove round for miles last night when they were particularly bad and the poor dog was frantic. He shakes, pants and is up and down like something possessed. It is awful and really stressful for us to watch him like that.
Our neighbour always has a huge firework party and so we have no option but to go out. If the fireworks are in the distance we can just about manage it by having the TV on very loud, having a calming spray from the vets and trying to comfort him. We have tried ear defenders - he pulls them off, we have tried wrapping him in a scarf as recommended but he goes berserk trying to get it off.
I know I sound like a right misery and a party pooper but I really wish that they would only have them at organised events and not be for sale to the general public. I'd also like to see them only let off on bonfire night and not for weeks and weeks either side. They will just about be over then they will be selling them again for New Years Eve!!
Sorry for the short post but they're going off here again tonight. Wish me luck!

I will try to read all comments and reply. Please be polite and kind. Thanks :)
I'm not sure if I've commented before but this subject is close to my heart having had dogs all my life and our current dog is the first one not to be too bothered so far. I'm not sure if it made a difference or if its just his personality but when we got him we followed Victoria Stillwell's advice on You Tube and she had for sale a cd to play for the dog leading up to the fireworks. I used it for about two months leading up to our first Firework night, playing it almost daily while sitting brushing his hair. You play it quietly to begin with and the cd gets louder as it progresses but nearer the time I started playing it much louder so that it would be pretty loud. It doesn't replicate the booms and explosions felt in the house but it must have helped a bit as now he really doesn't bother too much. The music is quite pleasant too! I'm not sure what age your dog is but if its still young it might be worth a try for the New Year fireworks and next year? Our last dog was awful every year till he was 12 when he went deaf, then it was just the really big explosions he could feel that bothered him, but he used to try to dig his way out of the house to escape. It was a nightmare. Good luck. x
ReplyDeleteHi Marksgran. Yes I think you have commented before, lovely to hear from you again. I'm pleased that your new dog seems to be fine with the fireworks. My brother has a labrador who is absolutely fine too. Funny isn't it? Our dog is almost 11 so I fear there isn't much hope of a change except as you say unless he goes deaf with old age. I've not heard of that CD but I will look for it. I'm willing to give anything a go. x
DeleteI’m totallt in agreement about the fireworks. They were still going off here at 1am which is against the law! Postponed display from last night is on tonight and huge displays tomorrow as well. BAh humbug says me.
ReplyDeleteDoes make you feel like a real killjoy doesn't it but I just absolutely dread it. They're going off again tonight here and there is a display planned for Friday evening just up the road. :( x
DeleteSeems to be a 4 day festival this year too with organised displays on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday evenings.
ReplyDeleteWe have some this weekend too Caree x
DeleteI agree even before we had Ruby, we got annoyed with the length of it all. Fingers crossed, so far so good, but she has noticed them.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad she doesn't seem bothered. Hopefully she will stay like that. x
DeleteMy schnauzer isn't too bothered, he just barks a bit when they start and then carries on as normal, but the yorkie is scared. I held her close on Saturday night and she wasn't too bad but she wouldn't let me do that yesterday. I put her bed in the downstairs loo that is in the middle of the house ( no windows) and she stayed there all evening and night. Our local radio station 3CR BBC is doing a phone in at 9 about whether fireworks should be only organised events. There is already a connected stream on facebook and 99% are against all the random fireworks going on for weeks and weeks!!
ReplyDeleteHi Frances. I have signed a petition to get them banned apart from organised events and when I've been speaking to people lots are in agreement. It's not only pets that are upset by them, a lot of elderly people are scared, children with autism and indeed some adults, wildlife and farm animals. I even heard of a homeless man having a firework thrown at him. Awful!
DeleteFor years and years there have been calls for fireworks to be allowed only at organised displays but to no avail. I admit to enjoying a good display (though rarely actually see one) but have no desire to have them at home or to hear bangers going off for several weeks. One night last year (midnight) they went off for almost an hour one after the other.
ReplyDeleteThat's terrible Eloise. Some people have no consideration for others at all. I can't understand why they are not banned. I think one of the scariest things is people having firework parties where alcohol is consumed. So. so dangerous. I'm surprised that there aren't more accidents.
DeleteYes let's be careful. Thanks for sharing this post.
